But do you get to blow the horn sometimes?

;-)

I can't describe how much this insect mentality angers me. Authorities the world over seem intent on dividing humans into licensed tool users and the unthinking rest. What shall we call them, Homo Habilis and Homo Asapiens?

"So when will the .gov there start issuing Nerf™ sporks, and collecting up all the flatware? Oh, and issuing pre-pureed foodstuffs to the proles? Someone could get hurt!"

I'm starting to think Wells had it right with the Morlocks and Eloi. Maybe not the details, since he was criticizing Marx's socialism and the class based rifts, but it sure feels similar.

Found it, but I don't know if this will work: if not, look for a story called "Cocoon" in Future Imperfect, online at baen dot com. It's Chapter 17.

Try computing your salary, in $/hr, two ways: 1) assuming a 40 hr work week; and, 2) adding to those 40 hrs all the extra time you spend now, including extra travel time and time away from home sitting in hotel rooms wishing you remembered how your own bed felt. Methinks it will surprise thee.

The owner of the business I retired from was overheard saying that the reason he set arbitrary and unrealistic deadlines was that it convinced gullible engineers to work overtime without pay. I never worked ANY overtime after that.

I get paid for every hour I work, but at the base pay rate. This week, 63.5 hours, including travel time.

Ah, that explains a lot. If only I had worked under such terms ...
