Yeah, is that me on the APO AP? I know I check out your site, but I didn't think I checked it out THAT much!

Faith-reader-sarah-sent-me.html? Is that our sarah? Heh. What the heck is that?

He/she/it was reading It's Not ALL Faith. Before I figured out how the title links worked, all links to individual articles were the first x number of characters in the post, minus "a" and "the" and the like.

I'd say it's a spider. Or someone who works at a coffee joint...

Or some loser trying to hack your site.

Best guess is that it's a bot of some kind.

A bot doing what?

jsid-1145670794-359195  Standard Mischief at Sat, 22 Apr 2006 01:53:14 +0000

A bot doing what?

he/she/it could have some type of pre-fetch accelerator going, attached to his browser and adjusted all out of whack.

A bot is a program that craws the web. Search engines use them to index the web. Well behaved ones don't hit websites that fast though. if a bot is well behaved, you can exclude it with a line in your robots.txt file.

So what's this one's "user agent string"? sometimes that can be a clue.

jsid-1145671043-359197  Standard Mischief at Sat, 22 Apr 2006 01:57:23 +0000

oh yea,

a web spider is roughly the same as a bot.

Actually bots are automated programs that can do all kinds of things, like manage emailing lists, irc channels, commit click fraud on google ads, etc.

Web spiders are a subset of bots.

UPDATE:

Not a 'bot. Via email:

I am probably the huge hit on your site from last night.

I cannot seem to read more than a paragraph off the screen, so I grab long articles and print them. I am sure the greenies are looking for me right now, but this allows me to use the best known most familiar User Interface, which can be read in nearly any location under nearly all conditions (darkness sucks...). I found a great deal of interesting stuff, so I just sat down and grabbed the material for off-line and off electricity reading.

I am a long time conservative and repeated reader of Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged." No collectivist here.

Rob (in Santa Clara, not Sunnyvale. I am thinking that Sunnyvale is where the ISP connects in.)

Oh! What a disappointment.

jsid-1145723880-359258  Kevin Baker at Sat, 22 Apr 2006 16:38:00 +0000

I'm not disappointed. Somebody new found my site and was interested enough to read a LOT!

I've got someone reading my archives, as I type this, whose been on for 2 hours, 11+ minutes.

Who's the bigger loser, someone who reds my blog for two hours on a Saturday night, or me, for tracking him via Sitemeter on a Saturday night?

Yes.

Welcome to the club.

I just which I'd noticed the Sitemeter "entry page" link back when I got the load of referrals via Slovak webmail servers. Then I'd at least know what the email circulating over there was sending people to.
