Title: The Outside Looking In
Excerpt: we have spent the last 30 years contemplating our belly buttons.

After World War II most of the world stopped looking forward, and started looking inward.
There were too many social problems. There was too much poverty and hunger and disease.

Just now. Good piece.

Good stuff, Kevin. I didn't know this was your background. Were you acquainted with Cline Frasier, by any chance?

Competition brings out the best in people, and it's no different for a giant entity like NASA. It does well when it competes, and right now no one's giving the U.S. space program a run for its money like the Soviets did in their time. Looking at stuff like Virgin Galactic and the endeavors of Burt Rutan's outfit, I think commercial space flight is going to drive the next boom. (Thank you, capitalism!)

Anyway, thanks for the thoughtful piece.

Thanks for the comment.

Very interesting story. I live in PA and I've never seen a live launch but I grew up in the 60's and avidly followed the space program. I agree with you that NASA has become just another government bureaucracy.

On the bright side, do you know about www.spacecraftfilms.com? I just bought a DVD player because of them. Great stuff. I've been wanting this for years without realizing it.

Oh, dude! I think that site is going to cut severely into my discretionary spending budget!
